ADOPTED RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE VESTAVIA HILLS HIGH SCHOOL DEBATE TEAM

WHEREAS, the Vestavia Hills High School Debate Team is the only team in the 70-year history of the National Forensic League National Speech and Debate Tournament to win national championships in both Lincoln Douglas debate and policy debate; and
 
WHEREAS, because of the stringent qualification process for this competition, the Vestavia Hills High School Debate Team represented not only Vestavia Hills High School but the state of Alabama as it competed with 2,000 students from across the United States to win the National Championship in Kansas City; and
 
WHEREAS, for several years, Vestavia Hills High School has qualified more students for Nationals than any other school in the state of Alabama and, for the eighth year in a row, the Vestavia Hills High School Debate Team won the Homewood Patriot Classic, Alabama’s largest invitational tournament; and
 
WHEREAS, the Vestavia Hills High School Debate Team competed with more than 1,000 teams to win four silver key championships at the Barkley Forum for High Schools at Emory University, the nation’s largest and most prestigious invitational tournament from which 300 students are turned down each year for competition; and WHEREAS, Vestavia Hills High School debaters also have brought home championships from Wake Forest University, the University of Alabama, Samford University, St. Mark’s School of Dallas, Bronx High School of Science, Glenbrook High School in Chicago, Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville, the National Tournament of Champions at the University of Kentucky and many statewide competitions; and
 
WHEREAS, the Vestavia Hills High School Debate Team received the leading Chapter Award for the Deep South District of the National Forensic League, a recognition of continuing success and strength rather than of a single accomplishment, and was featured in The Rostrum, the nationally distributed magazine of the National Forensic League; and
 
WHEREAS, Vestavia Hills High School students, teachers and parents can be very proud of their outstanding debate program and of the dedication and commitment that has resulted in the continued success of the Vestavia Hills High School Debate Team:
 
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Alabama State Board of Education does hereby recognize and commend all of the members of the Vestavia Hills High School Debate Team on receiving these prestigious and well-deserved national and state honors; and
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Alabama State Board of Education commends the parents and teachers of these champion students; Mr. Michael S. Gross, Principal, Dr. Frances Manning, Assistant Principal, and Ms. Marilee Dukes, Debate Team Coach, Vestavia Hills High School; members of the Vestavia Hills City Board of Education; and Dr. J. Carlton Smith, Superintendent, Vestavia Hills City Schools, for their assistance and support of these Vestavia Hills High School students.
