RESOLUTION IN HONOR AND RECOGNITION OF THE DALE COUNTY STUDENTS ASSIGNED TO THE SCHOOL BUS DRIVEN BY MR. CHARLES "CHUCK" POLAND, JR., ON JANUARY 29, 2013

WHEREAS, Courtney Brown, J. J. Chicarello, Austin Clary, Cierra Clary, Andres Contreras, Kimberly Dickey, Dav`ion Eberhart, Ethan Gilman, Robert Glover, Makayla Graves, Elishua Harrell, Charlye Henderson, Courtney Higginson, Lauren Higginson, Frank Hill, Mathius Hill, Lilly Grace Holland, Teona Hollis, Crystal Hursey, Kealy Johnson, Anna Jones, Keira Jones, Tyler Jones, Ayden Kelly, Caitlyn Miliner, Jackson Miller, Jesse Miller, Madison Milliner, Austin Moore, Elizabeth Plansencia, Eden Richards, Tavares Singletary, Terrica Singletary, Tristian Singletary, Michael Smith, Anthony Thornton, Ashley Thornton, Tre` Watts, and Shambraya Wilkerson rode Dale County school bus number 04-02 and were all dearly loved by their school bus driver, Mr. Charles “Chuck” Poland, Jr.; and

WHEREAS, these students loved their school bus driver, Mr. Charles “Chuck” Poland, Jr., a true hero who stood between an armed attacker and the students on his school bus and gave his life to protect his children, being shot and killed by a lone gunman as he drove his route in Midland City, Alabama, on January 29, 2013; and

WHEREAS, Andres Contreras, Kimberly Dickey, Ethan Gilman, Frank Hill, Mathius Hill, Teona Hollis, Crystal Hursey, Kealy Johnson, Anna Jones, Keira Jones, Tyler Jones, Caitlyn Miliner, Madison Milliner, Austin Moore, Tavares Singletary, Terrica Singletary, Tristian Singletary, Michael Smith, Ashley Thornton, Tre` Watts, and Shambraya Wilkerson were on the school bus at the time of the tragic incident and displayed unbelievable bravery and true compassion for each other and displayed the safety skills and knowledge taught to them by Mr. Poland; and

WHEREAS, their courageous actions during the life-threatening event helped protect the safety and security of every child on the bus who now has the opportunity to live a full and happy life and grow up to be a productive member of society; and

WHEREAS, one student, five-year-old Ethan Gilman, demonstrated bravery far beyond his years after being taken hostage by the gunman and held in an underground bunker for approximately seven days until he was freed by law enforcement on February 4, 2013; and

WHEREAS, through the unfailing efforts of numerous law enforcement officers, their school system, numerous churches and service agencies, and a caring, loving community, all the children, including Ethan Gilman, were safely returned to their family and friends; and

WHEREAS, the tremendous bravery and heroism of the students riding school bus number 04-02 on the afternoon of January 29, 2013, reflect great honor upon their families, the Dale County School System, their community, Mr. Poland, and the entire state of Alabama:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Alabama State Board of Education does, with gratitude and thanksgiving, honor and recognize each student for the bravery he or she demonstrated during this life-threatening event and each student’s heroism the face of incredible danger.
