Search Adopted Resolutions:


WHEREAS, Dr. Mary Jane Caylor began serving her first term representing District Eight on the Alabama State Board of Education in January 1995, has served as President Pro Tem since July 8, 2008, and will complete her fourth term in January 2011; and

WHEREAS, during her 16 years of service on the Alabama State Board of Education, Dr. Mary Jane Caylor has dedicated herself to the improvement of education for all students attending public schools in District Eight and statewide; and

WHEREAS, during Dr. Mary Jane Caylor’s tenure on the Alabama State Board of Education, Alabama public schools have benefitted from the creation and implementation of the Alabama Reading Initiative; the Alabama Math, Science, and Technology Initiative; ACCESS - Alabama Connecting Classrooms, Educators, and Students Statewide; the Alabama Learning Exchange, or ALEX; the expansion of Advanced Placement courses to every high school in the state through distance learning; Annual Report Cards; Teacher Education Report Cards; the Educational Ruler; Principal and Superintendent Leadership Academies; Torchbearer Schools; Graduation Coaches; FIRST CHOICE; and the adoption of the Common Core State Standards; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Mary Jane Caylor – working with the business community in District Eight -- secured the use of a car for one year for the Alabama Teacher of the Year for the first time ever in the program’s history; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Mary Jane Caylor has continued to support the Alabama Teacher of the Year Program serving as a district and state-level judge as well as State Board delegate to local and national conferences; and

WHEREAS, among her many leadership roles, community involvements, and honors, Dr. Mary Jane Caylor is the former Superintendent of the Huntsville City Schools, 1984-91; a former college professor, assistant superintendent, director of special education, and elementary school teacher; a charter member of Leadership Alabama Inc.; and alumna of the first class of Leadership Alabama; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Mary Jane Caylor established the Huntsville City Schools Foundation in 1991, was selected 1990 Superintendent of the Year by the Alabama Council of PTAs and as Alabama’s finalist for 1991 Superintendent of the Year by the American Association of School Administrators, and is an Alabama PTA Honorary Life Member: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Alabama State Board of Education and the State Superintendent of Education do hereby proudly and publicly express their deepest gratitude to Dr. Mary Jane Caylor for her unselfish service and commitment to public education and her professionalism during nearly two decades on the Alabama State Board of Education, and for bringing public education in Alabama into the new millennium; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That we do hereby thank Dr. Mary Jane Caylor for her service to the schools, students, educators, and parents in the state of Alabama and for her advocacy of high standards, accountability, and overall elevation of the statewide mission of improving public education.
