IN HONOR OF DR. JOYCE LEVEY, SUPERINTENDENT,
TUSCALOOSA CITY SCHOOLS, 2010 ALABAMA/CLASSWORKS
SUPERINTENDENT OF THE YEAR

WHEREAS, Dr. Joyce Levey, Superintendent of the Tuscaloosa City Schools since 2003, has been named the 2010 Alabama/Classworks Superintendent of the Year by the School Superintendents of Alabama; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Joyce Levey will represent Alabama in the National Superintendent of the Year program, which is sponsored by the American Association of School Administrators (AASA), and will be honored as the Alabama Superintendent of the Year at the AASA National Conference on Education in Phoenix, Arizona, on February 12, 2010; and

WHEREAS, under Dr. Joyce Levey’s leadership, there has been a focus on professional development throughout the school system; the Tuscaloosa City Schools began an Administrative Academy for principals and central office staff and an Aspiring Administrative Academy, both with a mission to train leaders for the 21st Century; and Professional Learning Communities were implemented throughout the system, thereby connecting change in the school system to current research; and

WHEREAS, during Dr. Joyce Levey’s tenure as superintendent, Tuscaloosa City Schools has worked to provide a Pre-K program to more than 1,028 four-year-old children who are academically at-risk in the city of Tuscaloosa for which they received the State and National Civic Star Award; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Joyce Levey has maintained a strong connection to The University of Alabama, participated in the Superintendent’s Academy, served on Advisory Committees, and recently was presented the Center for Community-Based Partnerships Excellence in Engagement Award for outstanding partner-initiated engagement efforts; and

WHEREAS, under Dr. Joyce Levey’s leadership, a new magnet school opened this year, several schools have been built, and much needed change has come to programs from the elementary to high school levels; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Joyce Levey is an effective leader who has successfully initiated change through her passionate endeavor to build leadership and ownership within the school family and through the implementation of programs such as the Pre-K Initiative, Positive Behavior Support System, a district strategic plan, a demographic study, Helping Families Linking Parents Initiative, and professional learning communities; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Joyce Levey was selected by School Superintendents of Alabama and the Best Practices Center to participate in the Superintendents’ Leaders Network, a professional network for forward-thinking Alabama superintendents:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Alabama State Board of Education does hereby recognize and honor Dr. Joyce Levey, Superintendent of Tuscaloosa City Schools, for her leadership as superintendent and for her selection as the 2010 Alabama Superintendent of the Year.
