RESOLUTION IN HONOR OF SARAH VERSER FOR OUTSTANDING COMMITMENT TO PUBLIC EDUCATION AND NOMINATION TO THE ALABAMA ASSOCIATION OF SCHOOL BOARDS EDUCATION MEDIA HONOR ROLL

WHEREAS, in each community, public schools are shaped by citizens’ commitment to providing an appropriate and adequate education for their schoolchildren; and
 
WHEREAS, public schools are dependent upon the community’s support in countless ways, including participation in volunteer and booster programs, assistance in crafting the schools’ goals and support for those goals, provision of adequate financial support and selection of qualified school board members; and
 
WHEREAS, much of the community’s knowledge of and opinions about its public schools are based on information provided through the news media; and
 
WHEREAS, the news media determines what news and information will be shared with the community, how much attention to focus on various issues and the tone of the reporting; and
 
WHEREAS, Sarah Verser has served the state of Alabama, the administrators, teachers, students, and parents of Alabama’s K-12 public schools as a media representative for WBRC-Fox 6 Television in Birmingham since 1989; and
 
WHEREAS, Sarah Verser is actively involved in community activities and uses that involvement through the broadcast of What’s Right With Our Schools?, a twice-weekly program featuring positive stories in Alabama schools; and
 
WHEREAS, Sarah Verser has received many awards and recognitions including the 2000 Media Women of Distinction Award and Alabama’s Association Press Award for Best Specialized Reporter in 2001; and
 
WHEREAS, Sarah Verser was recognized by the Birmingham Black Journalists with a 2005 first-place award for the story Principal for a Day describing an inside look at the administration and students in Birmingham’s Wenonah High School; and
 
WHEREAS, Sarah Verser uses her media presence as a news reporter and television anchor for WBRC-Fox 6 News to address and further the needs of her community; and
 
WHEREAS, Sarah Verser exhibits true professionalism and selfless dedication to her career and her community, including her creative input to the What’s Right With Our Schools? Program, which spotlights the many excellent activities, students, and educators in Alabama public schools:
 
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Alabama State Board of Education does hereby express its gratitude to Sarah Verser for her commitment and distinguished service to Alabama’s K-12 public school students by using her gifts of time and talent and submits her name to the Alabama Association of School Boards’ Statewide Education Media Honor Roll, calling attention to the ongoing, responsible and exemplary nature of reporting on Alabama’s public schools.
