ADOPTED RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE HONORABLE PETE TURNHAM, RECIPIENT OF THE 1995 PRESIDENTIAL AWARD FOR EXCEPTIONAL AND INNOVATIVE LEADERSHIP TO ADULT AND CONTINUING EDUCATION FROM THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF ADULT AND CONTINUING EDUCATION

WHEREAS, the American Association of Adult and Continuing Education awarded the Presidential Award for Exceptional and Innovative Leadership to Adult and Continuing Education to the Honorable Pete Turnham at its annual meeting on November 2, 1995, in Kansas City, Missouri; and
 
WHEREAS, in every field, there are those who surpass their peers both in terms of their vision of the future and their ability to mobilize others in shaping that future, and the Honorable Pete Turnham is such an individual, who demonstrates exceptional and innovative leadership in support of adult and continuing education; and
 
WHEREAS, the 1995 recipient of the Presidential Award, the Honorable Pete Turnham has demonstrated the ability to envision a new reality and aid in its transition into concrete terms, and is currently engaged in a leadership role in adult and continuing education; and
 
WHEREAS, the Honorable Pete Turnham is a tireless champion for adult education, who increased its state appropriation from $375,000 to $4.9 million, recognized the relationship between basic literacy skills and economic development, led the way in the creation and passage of the Alabama’s Workplace Education Tax Credit legislation, and currently chairs the Adult Education Advisory Council; and
 
WHEREAS, the Honorable Pete Turnham was instrumental in creating the Alabama Adult Literacy Resource Center and a standardized adult education curriculum, and is the driving force behind a bipartisan Adult Education Strategic Plan, and, through his networking with civic organizations, the Alabama Jaycees became “Partners in Literacy,” publishing informational brochures and conducting advertising campaigns to promote adult education:
 
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Alabama State Board of Education does hereby commend the Honorable Pete Turnham for receiving this award and does hereby express its appreciation to the “father” of adult education in Alabama and Alabama’s senior state legislator with more than 37 years of continuous service to the people of this great state.
