ADOPTED RESOLUTION COMMENDING VESTAVIA HILLS HIGH SCHOOL MATHEMATICS TEAM

WHEREAS, the Alabama State Board of Education and the Alabama State Department of Education recognize mathematics as a vital part of a student’s education; and
 
WHEREAS, for the seventh consecutive year, the Vestavia Hills High School Mathematics Team placed first in competition at the annual Mu Alpha Theta National High School Mathematics Convention, which is sponsored by Mu Alpha Theta and the Mathematical Association of America; and
 
WHEREAS, Vestavia Hills High School competed with schools nationwide at this year’s competition in Sugarloaf, Maine, and won first place in the Varsity, Junior Varsity and Sweepstakes levels of competition, in addition to first-place honors at the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria, Virginia; and
 
WHEREAS, for the last five years, the Vestavia Hills High School Mathematics Team has won first place in the State Written Math Contest at all three levels — Geometry, Algebra II and Comprehensive — first or second place at all Southeastern math contests at all levels, and first-place sweepstakes in The National Math League, the Alabama-Louisiana-Mississippi Math League and The American Scholastic Math League; and
 
WHEREAS, the Vestavia Hills High School Mathematics Team made the second highest national score on the American Math High School Competition in 1995, and 13 individual team members scored a perfect “80” on the 1995 PSAT; and
 
WHEREAS, Vestavia Hills High School students, teachers and parents can be very proud of their outstanding mathematics program and of their dedication and commitment that has resulted in its continued success; and
 
WHEREAS, Vestavia Hills High School also can attribute its successful mathematics program to its experienced teachers and hard-working students who arrive at school early, skip lunch periods and stay late to practice and study:
 
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Alabama State Board of Education does hereby recognize and commend all of the members of the Vestavia Hills High School Mathematics Team on receiving these prestigious and well-deserved national, regional and state honors by competing against other high school students from schools across the nation; and
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Alabama State Board of Education commends the parents and teachers of these champion students; Mr. Michael S. Gross, Principal, Vestavia Hills High School; Dr. Frances Manning, assistant principal; Ms. Kay Tipton and Ms. June Stephenson, math team sponsors; members of the Vestavia Hills City Board of Education; and Dr. J. Carlton Smith, Superintendent, Vestavia Hills City Schools, for their assistance and support of these Vestavia Hills High School mathematics students.
