CONGRATULATING W.H. COUNCIL TRADITIONAL SCHOOL PRINCIPAL HATTIE ALEXANDER ON BEING THE RECIPIENT OF THE TERREL H. BELL AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING SCHOOL LEADERSHIP

WHEREAS, the Terrel H. Bell Award for Outstanding School Leadership, named in honor of the second U.S. Secretary of Education, recognizes outstanding school leaders for the vital role they play in guiding students and schools to excellence, frequently under challenging circumstances; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of her exceptional work, Hattie Alexander, Principal at W.H. Council Traditional School in Mobile, was recently one of seven educators nationwide presented with the Bell Award at the 2013 National Blue Ribbon Schools Awards Ceremony in Washington, D.C.; and

WHEREAS, principals selected as Bell Award recipients are school leaders committed to fostering successful teaching and learning at their schools and doing “whatever it takes” to help their students meet high standards; and

WHEREAS, principals selected as Bell Award recipients have transformed their schools through vision and collaborative leadership styles that have produced outstanding results for all their students, regardless of race, language proficiency, or socioeconomic status; and

WHEREAS, the Bell Award is given by the U. S. Department of Education, together with the National Association of Elementary School Principals, the National Middle School Association, and the National Association of Secondary School Principals. Principals are nominated by their school communities during the final stages of the National Blue Ribbon Schools application process; and

WHEREAS, in giving the award, the U.S. Department of Education cited Hattie Alexander’s numerous accomplishments at Council, including the magnet school’s International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program; tutoring programs for students who need extra assistance; the Bridges Program to assist kindergarten students with their transition from preschool to elementary school; Camp Council for new students; and the school’s teacher mentoring program:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Alabama State Board of Education does hereby congratulate Hattie Alexander on being a recipient of the Terrel H. Bell Award; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Alabama State Board of Education does hereby recognize Hattie Alexander for showing that with effective leadership and teaching and a firm conviction, all students can learn, thus epitomizing the qualities and actions of a PLAN 2020 Professional.
