COMMENDING THE 2013-2014 ALABAMA TEACHER OF THE YEAR DR. ALISON GRIZZLE OF P. D. JACKSON OLIN HIGH SCHOOL, BIRMINGHAM CITY SCHOOL SYSTEM

WHEREAS, Dr. Alison Grizzle earned an Ed.D. in Teacher Leadership from Walden University, M.A. in Mathematics Education from the University of Alabama Birmingham, B.A. degrees in Mathematics and Literature from Denison University, and is a National Board Certified Teacher (NBCT); and

WHEREAS, Dr. Alison Grizzle decided not to pursue a career as a financial analyst and followed her heart by entering the world of education and pursuing her passion to teach in high-needs schools because she believes urban districts have more difficulty attaining and retaining good teachers; and

WHEREAS, since earning her M.A., Dr. Alison Grizzle has taught mathematics in the Birmingham City School System since 1999; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Alison Grizzle is always looking for ways to help her students conquer their fear of mathematics and achieve success in her class, which has resulted in students averaging an 85 percent pass rate on the mathematics portion of the high school exit exam the last several years, including her special-needs pupils; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Alison Grizzle’s greatest service is within her school community, as she offers uncompensated tutoring to any student before and after school and provides other support to students in need; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Alison Grizzle’s professional associations include the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and American Federation of Teachers; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Alison Grizzle has been a guest presenter/facilitator at many local and state education conferences; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Alison Grizzle personifies the time, attention, and patience that great educators show every day in the classroom:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Alabama State Board of Education congratulates Dr. Alison Grizzle for being named the 2013-2014 Alabama Teacher of the Year and expresses its gratitude to Dr. Alison Grizzle for her dedication to education, her commitment to learning, and the inspiration that her career has brought to the teaching profession for the benefit of students and teachers in the state.
