IN RECOGNITION OF DILHANI M. USWATTE,
BERRY MIDDLE SCHOOL,
HOOVER CITY SCHOOL SYSTEM
2009 MILKEN FAMILY FOUNDATION NATIONAL EDUCATOR AWARD
WHEREAS, the Alabama State Board of Education supports efforts to reward Alabama’s outstanding educators for their contributions to the educational experiences of Alabama’s students; and
WHEREAS, the Milken Family Foundation and the Alabama Department of Education provide Alabama teachers the opportunity to participate in the National Educator Awards; and
WHEREAS, the Milken Family Foundation National Educator Awards were first presented in 1987 to acknowledge educators’ crucial contributions to our national
well-being and to provide public recognition and financial rewards to talented elementary and secondary educators; and
WHEREAS, in 2009 over 50 top educators across the country were awarded up to $1.3 million; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Dilhani M. Uswatte is one of two educators in Alabama selected to receive this prestigious award in honor of her efforts on behalf of the nation’s schoolchildren; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Dilhani M. Uswatte, a mathematics teacher at Berry Middle School in the Hoover City School System, is innovative, enthusiastic, provides leadership opportunities and motivates students through themes such as “Mission Impossible Math”; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Dilhani M. Uswatte is described by her principal as one who is an engaged professional who has extended the walls of her classroom to the community:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Alabama State Board of Education does hereby commend Mrs. Dilhani M. Uswatte for achieving this prestigious honor and becoming Alabama’s 26th National Educator; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Alabama State Board of Education does hereby commend Dr. Kathleen Wheaton, Principal of Berry Middle School, and
Mr. Andy Craig, Superintendent of the Hoover City School System, for their support of Mrs. Dilhani M. Uswatte.
