PROCLAIMING NOVEMBER 15-21, 2009, AS
AMERICAN EDUCATION WEEK IN ALABAMA
WHEREAS, the National Education Association's 88th annual observance of American Education Week is November 15-21, 2009; and
WHEREAS, the theme of American Education Week - "Great Public Schools: A Basic Right and our Responsibility" - calls upon America to provide students with quality public schools so they can grow, prosper, and achieve in the 21st century; and
WHEREAS, American Education Week spotlights the importance of providing every child in America with a quality public education and the need for everyone to do his or her part in making public schools great; and
WHEREAS, the National Education Association and the American Legion co-sponsored the first American Education Week in 1921 to inform the public of the accomplishments and needs of the public schools, and to secure the cooperation and support of the public in meeting those needs; and
WHEREAS, the U.S. Office of Education joined the effort as a co-sponsor in 1922 and the PTA followed in 1938; and
WHEREAS, American Education Week promotes the cooperation and hard work of all educators, students, families, and communities involved in achieving student success; and
WHEREAS, American Education Week is an excellent opportunity for Alabamians to renew and expand their support for public education, and for schools to connect with their communities:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Alabama State Board of Education does hereby proclaim November 15-21, 2009, as American Education Week in Alabama and encourages local boards of education to participate in this celebration through activities that demonstrate to the public the importance of public education.
