COMMENDING ALABAMA PUBLIC SCHOOLS FOR ACCOUNTABILITY REWARDS FOR SCHOOL YEAR 2007-2008
WHEREAS, the Alabama State Board of Education authorized the State’s Accountability System under the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, which established a system of rewards for schools that meet or exceed annual academic achievement expectations; and
WHEREAS, the Alabama State Board of Education adopted a Fiscal Year 2009 Education Budget request that included state funding for academic achievement and Governor Bob Riley endorsed the request and included it in his 2009 Education Budget request and the Alabama Legislature approved funding; and
WHEREAS, the Alabama Department of Education established a subcommittee of the Accountability Advisory Committee that developed the “Alabama Rewards and Sanctions Plan” outlining general criteria to be used for identifying schools that should be rewarded for demonstrating outstanding student progress; and
WHEREAS, the Alabama Department of Education recognizes more than 200 Alabama public schools for achieving outstanding academic gains for the 2007-08 school year, and the Alabama State Board of Education has approved monetary rewards to these schools for their academic progress; and
WHEREAS, schools are selected based on 2007-08 assessment data; therefore, Adequate Yearly Progress – or AYP – reward recipients may receive multiple rewards in multiple categories and subgroups based on the following categories – Advancing the Challenge, Meeting the Challenge, Exceeding the Challenge, Addressing the Challenge, and Torchbearer School:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Alabama State Board of Education commends and congratulates these Alabama public schools for their academic progress and for being recipients of the 2008 State Rewards Program.
