IN HONOR OF DR. SUZANNE FREEMAN, SUPERINTENDENT, TRUSSVILLE CITY SCHOOL SYSTEM, ALABAMA/CLASSWORKS 2009 SUPERINTENDENT OF THE YEAR

WHEREAS, Dr. Suzanne Freeman has been named the Alabama/Classworks 2009 Superintendent of the Year by the School Superintendents of Alabama (SSA) and will compete for National Superintendent of the Year at the National Conference on Education in San Francisco in late February; and

WHEREAS, in 2004, Dr. Suzanne Freeman became the first Superintendent of Education for the newly formed Trussville City School System; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Suzanne Freeman previously served the education community, administrators, teachers, students, and parents as Superintendent in the Cullman County School System, Assistant Superintendent and Principal in the Auburn City School System, and as a teacher in the Opelika City School System; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Suzanne Freeman began her career in education in 1986 and holds a Doctorate of Philosophy and a Master of Education from Auburn University and a Bachelor of Arts from Asbury College in Kentucky; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Suzanne Freeman has created a leadership team and worked collaboratively both within the system and within the community to create an urgency to improve the educational opportunities for children; and

WHEREAS, during Dr. Suzanne Freeman’s tenure in Trussville, the first biomedical academy in the state was launched, as well as other academies, including engineering, law, information technology, finance, health, hospitality and culinary, business and marketing, and construction; and

WHEREAS, as a leader in her community, Dr. Suzanne Freeman is a member of the First United Methodist Church of Trussville, the United Way of Central Alabama Campaign Cabinet, Leadership Alabama Class XV, and the Trussville City Schools Foundation, and was named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Trussville Rotary Club; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Suzanne Freeman has provided statewide leadership serving as a role model for all superintendents and as a mentor in the SSA Executive Coaching Program for new superintendents by sharing her knowledge as an instructional leader for all new superintendent training programs;

WHEREAS, Dr. Suzanne Freeman served as SSA Secretary for three years and now serves as District V President and on the SSA Board of Directors:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Alabama State Board of Education does hereby express its gratitude to Dr. Suzanne Freeman for her distinguished service as Superintendent of Education for the Trussville City School System and for her more than two decades of service to the state of Alabama and its children and does hereby commend Dr. Suzanne Freeman for her many accomplishments and her dedication to public education; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Alabama State Board of Education does hereby extend its congratulations to Dr. Suzanne Freeman, Alabama/Classworks 2009 Superintendent of the Year and does hereby extend its best wishes as she represents Alabama as a finalist for National Superintendent of the Year.
